Faculty of Communication / Department of Communication Design and Management
Cihangir Istek is a Faculty Member and the Graduate Program Director at the Visual Communication Design Department of Istanbul Bilgi University.
He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of Istanbul Technical University; received his MSc. degree from University of London. Between 1994 and 1998, he was granted the 'Monbusho Scholarship' of the Japanese Government and completed his Ph.D. at University of Tokyo. In 2001 and 2002, he was twice awarded the 'Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship'.
He widely taught and lectured at universities like Tokyo, Tsukuba and Meiji Universities in Japan, University of California in Berkeley, the Amsterdam Berlage Institute of Architecture, and Bilkent University in Turkey. Currently, he is also a visiting faculty at the Faculty of Art, Design and Communication of Tama Art University in Tokyo.
In addition to his academic involvement, he also practices as an architect and designer, and completed many international building and interiors projects; exhibitions and space design works, and site-specific installations. Currently, he is an associate of Institute for Information Design Japan in Tokyo.
His research and professional interests include that design is not a single discourse, but a multitude of discourses always communicating with one another. He has a keen interest in this aspect of design while his work endeavors to combine research, education and practice. Other areas of interest are: Spatial Communication Design; Body (corporeal and social), Objects and Their Collective Performance in Space; Human Interaction with/in Built-Environments; Creative Thinking; Design Ideas, Strategies and Processes; Architecture and Cities; Environment and Sustainability.
