Sıla Karakaya had her BFA from Interior Architecture Department at Bilkent University; and MFA from Lighting Design at Parsons School of Design. She has gained her second master degree from New York University, TISCH School of the Arts with MFA degree in Production Design and Scenic Design.
She is building worlds for film and theatre characters. Sila’s latest art direction is director Joseph Rubens’Hollywood movie the Mountains and the Stones with Ben Kingsley and Josh Hartnett in a 1915 period film. Sila Karakaya had production designed Baskin (dir: Can Evrenol) the movie in 2015 which premiers in Toronto Film Festival TiFF as official selection. Another movie that the designer designed is the Fidelity (dir. Ilker Catak) movie; which got 42.Annual Student Academy Oscars in 2015.
Her featured movies include Alper Caglar’s Antidote inaction-noir genre. She was fortunate to art direct Spike Lee’s movie Redhook Summer. This is her second collaboration with Lee after HBO Channel series da Brick on Mike Tyson’s life. She is the asst. art director of Yilmaz Erdogan’s The Butterfly’s Dream and Alphan Eseli’s The Long Way Home. She feels very lucky to be part of numerous great theater and film productions since 2002.
Sila Karakaya founded Design+b612 under the Studios Cukurcuma Production Company. The designer currently teaches “Production Design: Costume and Scenic Design” classes at İstanbul Bilgi University Department of Architecture, Management of Performing Arts and Fashion Design. She holds O1 Extraordinary Talented Artist status awarded by the US Government.
