Paul Smith studied Microbiology and genetics at London's University college, and has worked in broadcasting for 28 years starting in BBC World service radio in 1979.

After a period in Radio Current Affairs, Paul started to specialise in programmes for young people by working at Radio 1 ...the BBC's national popular music Station. Moving to Television in 1985, Paul started to work on BBC Children's output and developed new on screen faces and approaches to children's broadcasting. He then worked for 5 years for BBC Entertainment executive producing music programmes for television. When the BBC decided to open two new digital television channels for Children, Paul was asked to oversee the starting the channels and then ran them for 3 years. Paul then added the two large children's websites to his responsibilities further building their quality and reach. Paul has developed many new programme formats for the BBC and has discovered and developed much on-screen and off screen talent.

For the last 18 months, Paul has been working in the BBC's editorial Policy unit, advising producers and developing policy for the BBC
