A free society depends for its strength on the capacity of its members to understand the very world that they live in. Revealing the nature of social life is the task of sociology. The discipline offers inspiring and exciting ways of comprehending ourselves, other people and social life in general and enables us to make sense of the rapidly changing world that we are living in.

The Sociology program consists of three broad types of courses. The first includes courses that aim to facilitate the development of core sociological knowledge, focusing in particular on theory and research issues. Students are exposed to a pluralistic combination of different theoretical and empirical approaches. The aim here is to provide students with theoretical and methodological tools in understanding and analysing society and social life.

The second consists of more specialised courses such as urbanisation, stratification, economic, political and historical sociology, religion, gender, social movements and the like. In these courses not only contemporary issues are emphasised but also their historical, comparative and global dimensions are explored.

Finally courses are offered to provide students with an understanding of contemporary Turkish society. These courses are designed to enable students to understand the structure of modern Turkey and to apply sociological thinking to current social trends in society.

The program is designed to enable students to relate theory to practice and engage in analysis and research. Students undertake a senior project during the course of their last year, which offers the opportunity to undertake research, study and writing in a variety of areas. Furthermore, they are encouraged and supported by the department to conduct their own independent research.
