Areas of Interest: I have, for the past 30 years or so focused on the field of family history, an interdisciplinary enterprise combining social anthropology, sociology, social history, and historical demography. My special interest has been on family, population, and social/cultural history during the period of transition from empire to republic in late 19th century and early 20th century Istanbul. More recently I have undertaken research on aging, intergenerational relationships, and social policy in Turkey. I am presently engaged in a new project that is partly ethnographic, partly autobiographical that focuses on Anatolia as a trope for displacement. The project is grounded in observations I have made since the mid-1960s during my residence in two Anatolian towns and related travels up to the present, as well as fieldwork in Istanbul and Anatolia, and historical research in Istanbul.
