The outcomes of the European Research Council (ERC)-funded research led by Prof. Ayhan Kaya, faculty member in the Department of International Relations and Director of the European Institute at our university, have been published as the book Youth Radicalisation in Europe: Nativists vs. Islamists by Routledge.

Based on extensive fieldwork conducted in Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands between 2020 and 2024, the book examines the drivers of radicalisation among young Europeans from diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. It demonstrates that both nativist and Islamist forms of radicalisation are rooted in shared experiences of inequality, insecurity, spatial marginalisation, and uncertainty about the future. The publication serves as an important resource for researchers, students, and policymakers.

With this research project, İstanbul Bilgi University became the first university in Türkiye to receive an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) in the field of social sciences. Click here for more information about the project.
