International Symposium on the Law of the Sea Organized by İstanbul Bi̇lgi̇ University Marine Law Research Centre in Cooperation With Uc Berkeley and Japanese and Korean Institutions

On 10 September 2011 İstanbul Bilgi University Marine Law Research Center hosted a symposium on “Safety, Security and Environmental Protection in Straits used in International Navigation: Is International law Meeting the Challenge?  The symposium was co-organized with the University of California Berkeley Law of the Sea Institute, the Oceans Policy and Research Development Foundation in Japan and  the Korean Research Development Institute from Korea with additonal support from the Turkish Ministry of Transport Coastal Safety General Directorate.  The aim of the symposium was to examine and discuss the current state of international law, policy and measures in addressing problems such as piracy, terror, accident prevention, and environmental protection in key straits critical for providing maritime commmunications around the world were examined and discussed in detail.

The participants included judges from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea,  ambassadors,  many renowned leading international law experts from fifteen different countries, the diplomatic community, energy companies and government officials.
