Faculty Member, PhD, Başak Akkan joined the Department of International Relations

We are delighted to announce that Başak Akkan, known for her significant academic contributions to Social Policy and Child Studies, has joined İstanbul Bilgi University Department of International Relations. Başak Akkan taught at the Graduate Program in Social Policy at Boğaziçi University and was an affiliate of the Social Policy Forum. She holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Social Science from Utrecht University, an MS degree in European Social Policy from the London School of Economics, and a BA degree in Sociology from Boğaziçi University. Her research interests are theories of justice and inequality with a particular focus on intersectionality, institutionalist analysis of care regimes, comparative social policy, and child well-being studies. Since 2014, she has been acting as a research partner of CUWB, an international research network on child well-being. Between 2017 and 2019, she acted as one of the principal researchers from Turkey and a member of the executive board in the EU Horizon 2020 project ETHOS (European Theory of Justice and Fairness). She has published in several scientific journals including Child Indicators Research, Children and Youth Services, Feminist Theory, Historical Social Research, Journal of Gender Studies, Social Inclusion, and Social Politics. Currently, she is co-editing the book Analysing Overlapping Inequalities in the Welfare State: Methodological Strengths and Challenges of Intersectional Approach to be published by Springer in 2023.
