‘İçimizden Biri’ event was held as part of December 3 International Day of People with Disability

BİLGİ Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Child Development held an event titled ‘İçimizden Biri’ as part of December 3 ‘International Day of People with Disability’, a day that the United Nations declared in order to raise awareness regarding the full and equal participation of disabled people to social life with other individuals.

 

Moderated by the Head of Child Development Department Prof. Dilara Fatoş Özer, the panel ‘İçimizden Biri’ addressed the problems that the individuals with autism run into and possible solutions for these problems. In the panel, Founding President of TODEV Arzu Gökçe and Süleyman Taşkın shared their experiences, feelings, thoughts, and views as a mother and father who have a child with autism spectrum disorder. Mesut Uygun and Rabia Aytek talked about the difficulties that they faced in their lives as individuals with autism, their plans for the future, and the things that are in need of improvement so that they could realize these plans. The speeches were translated into sign language by Ali Yalçın, a sign language translator.

 

Rabia Aytek, a Turkish Music student with autism from İstanbul Medeniyet University, enlivened the event with her guitar concert, and Mesut Uygun and Tuna Taşkın from Topkapı University’s Plato Vocational School participated in the event with an exhibition consisting of their paintings.
