Having an established academic past in the field of migration, İstanbul Bilgi University has been selected as a ‘University Specializing’ in the field of ‘Migration Research’ by the Council of Higher Education (CoHE).

Within the scope of CoHE’s ‘Universities Specializing in Priority Areas Project’, 43 state universities and 78 foundation universities were examined in terms of their publication and citation performance and in the context of Field-Based Competency Analysis Report of Universities prepared by TÜBİTAK. As a result of the assessment, it was decided that the relevant department or program of 25 state and foundation universities would be given the priority area mission in 15 scientific areas. İstanbul Bilgi University has become one of the two universities that was entitled to receive the certificate of ‘university specializing’ in the field of migration research.

The first migration research center working to carry out large scale, multidimensional scientific research in Türkiye was founded as a unit attached to Social, Economic, and Political Research Center within İstanbul Bilgi University in 2002. Since the completion of its foundation process in 2005, BİLGİ Center for Migration Research has been working to strengthen institutional coordination among researchers working on migration issues, support new research and joint projects, and produce realistic migration policies based on concrete data derived from research findings. Founded in 2022, BİLGİ Migration and Social Inclusion Field of Excellence aims to strengthen scientific and social knowledge and practices against discrimination, social marginalization, and hate speech in Turkish society with a perspective based on respect, access to fundamental rights, and social inclusion that also includes migrants.
