About the Program
The PhD in Communication is designed to provide advanced theoretical, methodological, and research training in the study of communication within contemporary social, cultural, and technological contexts. The program places particular emphasis on the transformations brought about by digital media, datafication, and artificial intelligence, while maintaining strong foundations in critical communication theory.
Grounded in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach, the program brings together perspectives from media studies, cultural studies, sociology, political communication, and related fields. It encourages students to engage with communication phenomena across diverse domains, including platformized media environments, visual and audiovisual culture, digital publics, and emerging forms of mediated interaction.
The program equips students with:
- advanced theoretical and conceptual knowledge in communication studies,
- the ability to design and conduct original research using diverse methodological approaches,
- and the capacity to contribute to academic and public debates through high-quality scholarly work.
The curriculum combines a limited set of core courses—such as Inquiry into Knowledge, Theories of Communication, and Seminar—with a wide range of electives, allowing students to tailor their academic trajectory in line with their research interests. Following the completion of coursework, students undertake a qualifying examination, develop a dissertation proposal, and proceed to independent doctoral research under the supervision of faculty advisors.
The program supports an intellectually open and research-oriented environment, encouraging students to develop original, critically engaged, and methodologically rigorous contributions to the field of communication.
