ITALIAN

LAN 109 –Elementary Italian I

LAN 109 is addressed to beginner students whose aim is to achieve the Elementary level (A.1.1, European Common reference level).  It aims to present basic grammatical structures and vocabulary used in daily life. It focuses on developing basic listening and comprehension skills through simple conversation and short compositions about the present and past actions.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • recognize familiar words and very basic phrases
  • use basic vocabulary needed to express oneself in daily life
  • use basic grammatical structures needed to express oneself in daily life
  • communicate effectively in some daily situations
  • read short texts


Weekly hours: 2 face-to-face hours + 2 online hours = 4 hours

Semester: Fall and Spring

LAN 110 –Elementary Italian II

LAN 110, as a continuation of LAN 109, aims to help students improve their competence in using basic structures and vocabulary used in daily life. There is a prerequisite between the two courses. In other words, only student who pass from LAN 109 can take LAN 110 course. Listening, writing and reading skills are further developed through conversation, reading and writing short texts about the past, present and future actions. On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • use familiar everyday expressions
  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly
  • write short, simple paragraphs
  • fill in forms with personal details read and understand longer texts


Weekly hours: 2 face-to-face hours + 2 online hours = 4 hours

SPANISH

LAN 121 – Elementary Spanish I

LAN 121 is addressed to beginner students whose aim is to achieve the Elementary 1° level (A.1.1, European Common reference level).  It aims to present basic grammatical structures and vocabulary used in daily life. It focuses on developing basic listening and comprehension skills through simple conversation and short compositions about the present and past actions.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • use basic grammatical structures needed to express oneself in daily life

LAN 122 – Elementary Spanish II

This course, as a continuation of LAN 121, aims to help students improve their competence in using basic structures and vocabulary used in daily life. There is a prerequisite between the two courses. In other words, only student who pass from LAN 121 can take LAN 122 course. Listening, writing and reading skills are further developed through conversation, reading and writing short texts about the past, present and future actions.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly
  • write short, simple paragraphs
  • fill in forms with personal details
  • read and understand longer texts

Semester: Fall and Spring

LAN 123 – Intermediate Spanish III

LAN 123, as a continuation of LAN 122, aims to bring students’ Spanish level to A2+/B1 level. The students must have taken LAN 122 as the prerequisite of this course. The course will help the student at this level build his/her confidence in communicating more effectively. Thorough review of the previous structures will be followed by presentations of new language structures. The course will revise and reactivate previously learnt vocabulary and increase the student's knowledge of the most frequently used words and phrases. This course will also include further four-skills development at this level.

  • develop their language knowledge and experience from A2 to A2+/B1 level in terms tenses and different modal auxiliaries expressing advice, possibility, and necessity
  • read and understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday language and understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters
  • follow clearly-articulated everyday conversations; discussions, or talks to get the gist, as well as to get the majority of specific information and details
  • start, maintain and close simple face-to-face conversations on topics that are familiar or of personal interest, by explaining personal opinion and giving reasons. write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

GERMAN

LAN 105 – Elementary German I

LAN 105 is addressed to beginner students whose aim is to achieve the Elementary level (A.1.1, European Common reference level).  It aims to present basic grammatical structures and vocabulary used in daily life. It focuses on developing basic listening and comprehension skills through simple conversation and short compositions about the present and past actions.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

CHINESE

LAN 113 – Elementary Chinese I

LAN 113 Elementary Chinese I course is recommended for students who don't know any Chinese. This course aims to offer students basic information on Chinese language and culture by focusing on the basic language structures and vocabulary used in daily life. In addition, Chinese Alphabet and writing systems and various Chinese traditions are introduced. 

  • write their names in Chinese alphabet and briefly introduce themselves in Chinese
  • read the basic signs written in Chinese alphabet
  • use basic vocabulary to express themselves in daily life
  • use basic sentence structures hold basic and simple conversations in daily life

RUSSIAN

LAN 211 – Elementary Russian I

LAN 211 Elementary Russian I course is an elementary course recommended for students who don't know any Russian. This course aims to introduce basic vocabulary and basic sentence structures used in daily life.   It focuses on developing basic listening and reading skills with simple dialogues and simple texts. In addition, the use of Cyrillic Alphabet and pronunciation rules are also introduced in this course.

  • use basic vocabulary that are necessary to express themselves
  • use basic sentence structures
  • identify features of Cyrillic alphabet and basic pronunciation rules
  • use nouns in Russian accurately hold basic conversations in daily life

Semester: Fall and Spring

 LAN 130 – Laz Language

This course aims to present the alphabet and fundamental structures of the Laz Language. By presenting the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary used in daily life, the course will provide the students with the basic knowledge of expressing themselves in Laz Language.  This course is a beginner level, only for students who do not have any Laz language background or for students who have very little knowledge.

On successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • use the basic vocabulary needed in daily conversations
  • Use basic language structures accurately
  • Talk about daily routines by using Simple Present Tense
  • Talk about past events by using Simple Past Tense
  • Talk about plans by using the Future Tense

LAN 210 — Turkish Sign Language I

Turkish Sign Language is a visual language used by the hearing impaired which consists of hand gestures and facial expressions. The purpose of this elective course is to teach the alphabet, basic vocabulary and grammar structure of Turkish Sign Language and to enable students to communicate with deaf people. This course is also recommended to all students who would like to develop their non-verbal communication skills.

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • use Turkish Sign Language alphabet
  • give relevant information about themselves
  • ask information about the others
  • use Turkish Sign Language to express their opinions in a range of everyday topics
  • use Turkish Sign Language to converse in a range of everyday topics

 LAN 220 — Turkish Sign Language II

This course aims to develop the vocabulary, grammar knowledge and conversational fluency of students who have taken Turkish Sign Language I. Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • use basic vocabulary in a wider range
  • apply grammar rules correctly
  • communicate in a wider range of topics effectively
  • communicate in a wider range of topics confidently
  • use Turkish Sign Language to express their opinions in a wider range of topics
