The TofuTable-Redesign project, designed by third-year students of BİLGİ Department of Industrial Design as part of the ID 302 Furniture Design Studio, is going to be exhibited at Boutique Design New York (BDNY)—one of the world’s leading furniture fairs—on November 9–10. The project was carried out in collaboration with students from Wentworth Institute of Technology (Boston) within the scope of the BİLGİ–Parla University–Industry Collaboration Protocol.

The Tofu-tilted side table stands out for its design approach, which skillfully blends traditional ceramic craftsmanship with contemporary industrial furniture production techniques. By combining craftsmanship with design functionality, the project focuses on the diversity of production and offers a distinctive perspective. This unique design will be showcased at BDNY, Booth No. 1473.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

At the core of the TofuTable-Redesign project lies the integration of the aesthetic and textural richness of ceramic craftsmanship with industrial production processes. Inspired by ceramic molding and shaping techniques, the redesign of the table’s main body aims to combine traditional craft elements with industrial manufacturing methods. The organic forms of the ceramic details create a balanced contrast with the table’s overall geometry.

By incorporating the distinctive character of ceramic material into the wooden table’s details, the students not only add an aesthetic dimension but also offer users a tactile experience. The integration of ceramic components with industrial production techniques ensures precision in both manufacturing and assembly. Tofu-tilted has thus become a unique piece of furniture that embodies both the individuality of traditional craft and the innovative line of industrial production. The project serves as an inspiring example of how craft techniques can be skillfully applied in industrial product design.
